EU’s bioethanol potential from wheat straw and maize stover and the environmental footprint of residue-based bioethanol

چکیده

To reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the European Union (EU) has targets for utilizing energy from renewable sources. By 2030, a minimum of 3.5% in EU’s transport sector should come biological sources, such as crop residues. This paper analyzed “advanced bioethanol” potential wheat straw and maize stover evaluated its environmental (land, water, carbon) footprint. We differentiated between gross net bioethanol output, latter by subtracting inputs production. Results suggest that annual amount sustainably harvestable is 81.9 Megatonnes (Mt) at field moisture weight (65.3 Mt dry weight), yielding 470 PJ (404 net) advanced output. Calculated can replace 2.95% EU sector’s consumption. land footprint 0.28 m2 MJ−1 0.18 stover. The average water 173 L 113 carbon per unit 19.4 19.6 g CO2eq stover, respectively. Using lead to emission savings, but production insufficient achieve target share biofuels associated footprints are not smaller than conventional bioethanol.

Combined production of bioethanol and biogas from wheat straw

Due to the problems with environment and green house gases more biofuels as bioethanol and biogas needs to be produced to reduce the problems. Wheat straw as raw material is a good choice for ethanol and biogas production since wheat is the most produced crop in Sweden and the whole Europe and it isn’t competitive to food. In this study three different options for pretreatment of wheat straw, c...

Bioethanol Production from Steam Explosion Pretreated Straw

1.1 Motivation and environmental aspects The combustion of fossil fuels is responsible for 73% of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and therefore contributes significantly to global warming. Interest in the development of methods to reduce greenhouse gases has increased enormously. In order to control such emissions, many advanced technologies have been developed, which help in reduc...

Bioethanol production from rice straw residues

A rice straw - cellulose utilizing mold was isolated from rotted rice straw residues. The efficient rice straw degrading microorganism was identified as Trichoderma reesei. The results showed that different carbon sources in liquid culture such as rice straw, carboxymethyl cellulose, filter paper, sugar cane bagasse, cotton stalk and banana stalk induced T. reesei cellulase production whereas g...

Bioethanol, biohydrogen and biogas production from wheat straw in a biorefinery concept.

The production of bioethanol, biohydrogen and biogas from wheat straw was investigated within a biorefinery framework. Initially, wheat straw was hydrothermally liberated to a cellulose rich fiber fraction and a hemicellulose rich liquid fraction (hydrolysate). Enzymatic hydrolysis and subsequent fermentation of cellulose yielded 0.41 g-ethanol/g-glucose, while dark fermentation of hydrolysate ...

Flexibility in wheat bioethanol plants

Bioethanol is mostly produced from wheat starch in Sweden. Due to the increasing wheat price it is no longer profitable to produce bioethanol from wheat. In this paper the conditions for converting a wheat bioethanol plant to a lignocellulosic bioethanol plant are studied. The most suitable lignocellulosic feedstock is investigated and soft wood chips are chosen based on bioethanol ...
